Building the Right Support
There is a national plan to develop community services and close inpatient facilities to people with learning disabilities and/or autism that display behaviour that challenges, including those with a mental health condition.
The new service we need (New Care Model)
People with a learning disability and/or autism that display challenging behaviour area a highly heterogeneous group. Some will have a mental health condition which may result in them displaying challenging behaviour. Some will display self-injuries or aggressive behaviour that could lead to contact with the criminal justice system. Some may have been in the NHS hospital for many years or long-stay hospital. The new services and support will put in place to support them in the community will need to reflect diversity. A new financial framework will underpin the delivery of the new care model.
